A good news story, an awesome promo and great love affair all often begin with a single spark. A singular moment, a seed or kernel that grows and becomes a thing of beauty. This promo seeks to illustrate that moment and the progression from genesis to fruition.
Inspired by the title sequence for Star Trek Discovery. Written, produced and directed by yours truly. (And I wrote this copy, too)

The most important word in weather forecasting - in weather is “Here”. What’s happening here? What’s headed here? When will it get here? In this fully animated spot for the CBS Chicago RealTime Weather brand, we demonstrate the importance of knowing the answers to all those “here” questions. And illustrate where that critical information is best found, here on CBS Chicago.

Chicago is a unique, diverse and yes, complicated city with stories as rich and complex as the people who live here. I like hearing and sharing these stories. Stories that paint a deeper, more intimate, more complete picture of the world of Chicago.
I am proud to have produced and edited a docu-series entitled, “Stories 2 Tell” with some friends at CBS Chicago.
Please enjoy responsibly.

There is something about honest, plain talk. No spin. No bull. Just natural emotion. A simple conversation. Unfiltered truth.
There is just something about being REAL.

The quote by Arundhati Roy that begins this promo sums up the concept. The overused and frankly insulting notion that there are sectors of society that have no voice is simply not true. But it is (or should be) the mission of all media that all voices can be heard...or at least not ignored. The genesis for this idea was a play on the philosophical question, "if a tree falls in the woods and there is no one there to hear it, does it make a sound." Our thought was if someone has a story and there is no one there to tell it...Well, you get the picture.

The struggle - the challenge of anyone producing promos for local news is saying something original and presenting it in a unique way. At least that’s one of the challenges.
The biggest challenge is not only convincing the audience that you have something that they cannot get anywhere else. But convincing them that it’s worth waiting for.

What do you do when you have a an intelligent, accomplished news anchor who is also an attorney with a law degree from an Ivy-league law school? Well, if you’re me and you also find out that she’s a Black belt, you put her in a promo and ask her to break some boards.
Yeah. That’s what you do.

The News Special Report. The bread and butter of every local news station - especially during sweeps. In-depth investigations, exclusive interviews and content you must see to believe. An ultra important part of your news experience.
And the promos that draw audiences into these newscasts for these stories are just as important. Perhaps more so.
Here are a few that I’ve written and produced.
